Situated in the heart of the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area, this proposal at Chester Road will provide long-stay temporary accommodation for 50 homeless families in a new purpose-built hostel for London Borough of Camden.
The development comprises three connected buildings arranged in a triangle around a communal garden that forms a nature-filled heart for the hostel. Completing the corner of Chester Road and Dartmouth Park Hill, new active frontages are restored to both streets and a landscaped pathway to the north will provide a pleasant and more accessible pedestrian route around the building.
Materials have been selected to complement the Conservation Area: a brick plinth provides a robust and tactile pedestal that grounds the proposal into the surrounding sloping streets, and the mature planting that softens the urban landscape is reflected in horizontal bands of glazed, profiled terracotta tiles that wrap around the façade. Through a highly insulated and airtight envelope with the use of PVs and air-source heat pumps the building will see a 47.0% improvement on Part L.
