Community-led homes win at Inside Housing Development Awards

Posted on 4 October 2023

We’re absolutely delighted that Joyce Newman House and Joseph Lancaster Terrace has won an Inside Housing Award for Best Affordable Development!

The community-led project follows on from Marklake Court as a unique partnership between Leathermarket Community Benefit Society (LCBS) and Southwark Council to deliver genuinely affordable homes for the local community on complex brownfield sites. LCBS have led the project on behalf of local residents, undertaking their own housing needs assessment, shaping the design and managing the homes while Southwark have provided the land and funding.

Joyce Newman House and Joseph Lancaster Terrace provide 40 new homes for social rent in a mix of houses and flats, a community garden and children’s play space for the wider estate as well as opening up new connections between the estate and adjacent school.

It’s no mean feat for a community group to come together to build homes for local people. This award is great recognition for the hard work and dedication of the many people at LCBS and the local community who have made these homes a reality.
