Urban regeneration in the 21st Century: from idea to reality
Posted on 21 January 2026
In 1998-99 our cofounder Tim Bell was 25 years old when awarded the RIBA Rome Prize, spending a research year at The British School at Rome. His time there proved profoundly formative; immersed in the city with sketchbook in hand, he spent an inspiring and fascinating year discovering the eternal city. Those experiences helped shape his understanding of architecture, and consequently, it has positively impacted our studio’s portfolio of work in urban regeneration.
At a moment when the UK faces an acute housing shortage, a broken funding model and the imperative to transition rapidly to a low-carbon future, Tim is back at the BSR to answer a vital question: how do we continue to pursue architecture that is joyful, intriguing and meaningful within these pressures?
His talk will explore how balancing design ambition with real-world constraints can absolutely result in successful urban regeneration. He will discuss the design process, from initial ideas all the way through to the completion of new neighbourhoods.
